How to add more tiles to Windows 10’s Start Menu

Windows 10’s Start Menu is one of the key highlights of the operating system, and yet it is not up to the liking of many users, especially those who upgraded from Windows 7.

But for the people who like it, here is a bit of good news.

The recently launched Threshold 2 update, Windows 10 Build 10586 adds a pretty slick feature, which allows you to get more out of the Start Menu. The feature I am talking about. is the ability to add more tiles in the Start Menu.

Microsoft had originally enabled this option, in Windows 10 Build 10547 Preview, which it released back in September. It allows the user to have 4 columns of tiles in the Start Menu. Prior to this, the available option was just 3. So no matter, how may groups of tiles you had, they were all limited to 3 columns.

Now however you can have groups of tiles with 4 columns. But this option is not enabled by default, as this is more useful to tablets users, or those with a touchscreen device. It is very easy to enable the option.

4. The very first option here, is “Show more tiles”, click on the toggle button to enable it.

The change is instantaneous and you don’t even have to reboot the computer or logoff or restart Explorer. You will be able to see a sample preview of the option, in the Personalization tab.

Now that you have enabled the feature, it is time to put it into action. Go ahead and click on the Start menu. You will see that your tiles are still in the old arrangement. Oh and make sure, you select the Medium tile size.

Drag any tile and add it to an existing group. You will now be able to add a tile to make up the 4th column. Add two more tiles below each other to make up a 5th and 6th row, if you want to.

If you find the new tile arrangement is not your cup of tea, simply repeat the steps given above to disable the option. This will revert to the old tile arrangement, and any group with more than 3 by 3 tiles, will be spit and rearranged to make new groups.

Win10Tile

Win10Tile is a new software designed to help Windows 10 users create and pin custom tiles to Start menu. Unlike some other tools out there, like Tile Creator for instance, this tool is fairly easy-to-use and more importantly, doesn’t require a universal version of the app to be installed to get started.

With Win10Tile you can create custom tiles by selecting your own icon or image for the tile and background color for the tile. The tool allows you create and pin tiles with or without adding labels for tiles. The initial version of Win10Tile supports only small and medium tiles but you can expect support for other tile sizes in upcoming releases.

The cool thing is that, custom tiles created using Win10Tile support jump list and context menu.
